Layers, groups, masks, and blend modes

Stack layers and nest groups, then reorder by drag, duplicate, merge, or delete. Set opacity and blend modes, and attach layer or clipping masks. Adjustment layers and layer styles like stroke, shadow, and glow stay editable at any time.

Photo adjustments with live preview

Tune light, color, color grading, curves, and more in the Photo Adjustments panel, guided by a histogram. Every change previews live, and with an active selection, adjustments apply only inside it.

Smart selections, made on device

Pick marquees, lassos, the magic wand, or object selection, and let on-device machine learning find the subject with Select Subject. Refine with color range, feathering, or expanding and shrinking. Fill, clear, mask, or extend areas with Content-Aware Fill, and remove backgrounds in one step.

Curves, levels, and lossless transforms

Shape color with curves, levels, hue and saturation, and gradient maps. Move, scale, rotate, and flip without losing quality: shrink an image, enlarge it again, and the original resolution comes back. Distort freely, transform several layers together, snap to alignment, and type exact values.

Retouch, draw, type, and export

Paint and erase with fully adjustable brushes, heal spots, clone areas, and blur, smudge, or liquify. Set text inside a paragraph box and tune fonts, spacing, and alignment, or draw shapes you can edit later. Export JPEG, PNG, or layered PSD, and share whole projects between apps.

Tools

The same app, pocket-sized

On iPhone the layout compacts without losing the layer workflow: tools line up along the bottom, and panels rise from the bottom edge.

Pencil, touch, and keyboard

Work with Apple Pencil pressure, finger gestures, or a hardware keyboard, whichever fits the moment.

All processing happens on your device, including the machine learning behind Select Subject and Remove Background.

Open, edit, and hand off

Open JPEG, PNG, HEIC, TIFF, camera RAW, and layered PSD or PSB files, with groups, masks, blend modes, and basic text still editable. Export JPEG, PNG, or a layered PSD, and share complete projects with other apps.

FAQ

How do I start a new project?

On the home screen, tap a canvas preset to create a canvas. You can also tap the photo button in the upper-right corner to import a photo from your photo library, or tap the folder button to open a file.

Which files can I import?

The folder button opens JPEG, PNG, HEIC, TIFF, camera RAW, and PSD / PSB files. You can also open these files from the Files app.

How do I export my work?

Tap the share button in the upper-right corner of the editor to export JPEG, PNG, or layered PSD, or to share the entire project. Exported images can be saved to the Photos app or sent to other apps through the share sheet.

Where are my projects saved?

Projects are saved automatically once a minute and when you leave the app, and there is no save button. Projects are stored on the device in the Tela folder, which you can find in the Files app under On My iPad or On My iPhone.

How do I use Apple Pencil, fingers, and gestures?

Apple Pencil is used for painting: pressure controls the brush tip size, and a double-tap on supported models switches between painting and erasing. A single finger uses the current tool, including painting, selections, and moving, so you can draw without an Apple Pencil. Drag with two fingers to pan the canvas or pinch to zoom. If Only Draw with Apple Pencil is turned on in Settings, fingers only pan and zoom. A two-finger tap undoes, a three-finger tap redoes, and a four-finger tap hides or shows the interface. An external keyboard supports the shortcuts commonly used in image editing.

How does Tela protect my privacy?

Select Subject and Remove Background use machine learning that runs on the device. Tela does not connect to the internet, requires no account, collects no data, and completes all processing locally.
